10 Orange Turmeric Mother Rhizomes (Curcuma Longa).
Simple instructions to grow your own healthy turmeric roots.
These are 10 live rhizomes recently harvested at our farm in Tallahassee, Fl. Each year we sell the finger rhizomes, but save the mother rhizomes to replant in the next growing season.
Each plant on our farm produces 2 – 4 lbs of fingers and several mother rhizomes. Plants started with the finger rhizomes will grow and produce an edible crop but the plants started from the mother rhizomes are more vigorous and produce a more abundant harvest of edible roots.
The rhizomes will be dormant when you receive them and they will stay this way until spring. The best way to ensure that it remains viable is to bury them in a bucket of sand. If you live in a warm area they can be planted directly in the garden, but do not expect any growth until April.
Turmeric likes rich organic soil and full sun to partial shade. Even though in can be grown in pots, I have found that the harvest is greatest when planted in the ground.
If you do not have the outdoor gardening space, or if your growing season is short then use the largest container you can easily move indoors when it gets too cold. Try to maintain uniform moisture throughout the growing season by using a potting mix with good drainage covered with a thick layer of mulch.
Turmeric is a tropical plant and will not do well if your location is too cold. Make sure that you have a nice sunny spot outdoors or provide enough space and artificial light for it to thrive indoors. The fully grown plant will be about 4 ft tall and 2-3 feet wide if the growing conditions are optimal.
