10 Walking Onion Sets – Heirloom Multiplier Allium Bulbs – Hardy Perennial for Summer/Fall Planting

Overview

Discover the joy of growing your own walking onion sets, a true garden marvel known for its hardiness and versatility. This offering provides 10 robust multiplier onion bulbs, perfect for establishing a long-lasting, self-sustaining patch in your garden. Also known as Egyptian Walking Onions or Tree Onions (Allium proliferum), these unique perennials propagate by forming bulbils at the top of their stalks, which eventually fall over and root, creating new plants. This ‘walking’ characteristic makes them an exceptionally low-maintenance and exciting addition to any edible landscape.

These heirloom perennial onions are cherished for their ability to thrive in a wide range of climates, enduring harsh winters and bouncing back with vigor each spring. Unlike typical annual onions, walking onion sets provide a continuous harvest of green tops, small to medium-sized bulbs, and the distinctive top-set bulbils. They are a fantastic choice for gardeners seeking a reliable, productive, and historically significant plant for their home garden.

• Container Friendly: While excellent in the ground, these onions can also be grown in pots or flower boxes, making them suitable for patios, balconies, or even kitchen sills.

Plant Care & Growing Tips

Growing walking onion sets is remarkably straightforward, making them an excellent choice for gardeners of all experience levels. These resilient plants thrive with minimal fuss, but a few key practices will ensure a bountiful harvest. They prefer a location with at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily, though they can tolerate some partial shade, especially in hotter climates. For optimal growth, choose a well-draining soil rich in organic matter. While they are adaptable, consistently water them during dry spells, especially during establishment, but avoid waterlogging as this can lead to rot.

The ideal planting time for these multiplier onion bulbs is late summer to late fall, allowing them to establish roots before winter and emerge vigorously in early spring. Simply plant the individual bulbils or small bulbs about 2-3 inches deep and 6-12 inches apart. They will quickly send up green shoots. While generally not heavy feeders, a light application of a balanced organic fertilizer in early spring can boost growth. These heirloom perennial onions are incredibly hardy, surviving harsh winters with ease, often down to USDA zone 3 and even colder. They are largely pest-free, though occasional onion thrips or slugs might appear; organic pest control methods are usually sufficient. Don’t worry if you’re new to gardening; these hardy onion bulbs are very forgiving.
