Overview

Introduce a truly unique and resilient addition to your garden with these heirloom walking onion sets. These fascinating perennial onion bulbs, also known as Egyptian Walking Onions or Tree Onions, get their name from their distinctive propagation method: they produce small bulbils (top sets) at the top of their stalks, which eventually fall over and root, effectively ‘walking’ across your garden. This offering includes 20 robust bulbs, ready for summer planting to establish a thriving, self-propagating patch for years to come. Renowned for their hardiness and delicious flavor, they are a fantastic choice for gardeners seeking low-maintenance, continuous harvests. The heirloom walking onion sets are a testament to enduring garden traditions, providing both a culinary delight and an intriguing botanical spectacle.

Unlike annual onions, these perennial onion bulbs offer a sustained yield, providing fresh greens from early spring and bulbs throughout the season. They are incredibly versatile, adaptable to various climates, and can withstand harsh winter conditions. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just starting, these multiplier onions are an excellent choice for adding flavor and history to your edible landscape.

Key Benefits

Embrace the many advantages of growing heirloom walking onion sets in your home garden:

• Continuous Harvest: Enjoy fresh onion greens from early spring until late fall, with bulbs available throughout the growing season. These multiplier onions provide a steady supply of flavor.
• Exceptional Hardiness: These onions are incredibly resilient, tolerating temperatures down to -30°F or more. They thrive in a wide range of climates and are resistant to many common pests and diseases.
• Self-Propagating Nature: The unique ‘walking’ habit means these onions naturally replant themselves, spreading gradually to form a dense patch without much intervention. This makes them a truly sustainable garden choice.
• Versatile Culinary Use: Both the greens and the bulbs offer a distinct, mild onion flavor. They can be used fresh in salads, cooked in soups, stews, casseroles, or as a flavorful addition to various dishes.
• Low Maintenance: Once established, walking onion care is minimal. They require little attention beyond occasional watering in dry spells and thrive with basic garden care.
• Historical Significance: These heirloom varieties carry a rich history, often passed down through generations, adding a unique story to your garden.
• Early Season Producer: Often one of the first edible plants to emerge in spring, providing fresh produce when other garden plants are just beginning to grow.

Plant Care & Growing Tips

Growing heirloom walking onion sets is remarkably straightforward, making them perfect for gardeners of all experience levels. These resilient perennial onion bulbs thrive with minimal fuss, ensuring a bountiful harvest year after year. For successful summer planting onions, choose a site with at least 6 hours of full sun per day. While they tolerate some shade, more sun encourages robust growth and larger bulbils. Plant the bulbs about 2-4 inches deep and 6-8 inches apart in well-draining soil. Good drainage is crucial to prevent root rot, so consider amending heavy clay soils with compost or sand.

Water regularly after planting to help them establish, keeping the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Once established, they are quite drought-tolerant but will benefit from watering during prolonged dry periods. These perennial onion bulbs are hardy and generally do not require heavy fertilization. A balanced organic fertilizer can be applied in early spring to encourage vigorous growth. They are hardy to USDA Zone 3 and can withstand very cold winters, often emerging even stronger the following spring. Keep the area around your heirloom walking onion sets free of weeds, especially during their initial growth phase, to reduce competition for nutrients and moisture.

Harvest the greens as needed throughout the growing season by snipping the tops. For the bulbs, you can pull small to medium-sized ones from the ground, or wait for the top sets to develop. These top sets can be harvested and eaten, or allowed to fall and replant themselves, continuing the ‘walking’ cycle. The unique propagation of these multiplier onions means you’ll have a continuous supply without needing to replant annually.
