Key Benefits

Adding Egyptian Walking Onion sets to your garden provides numerous advantages, from culinary versatility to effortless cultivation. These unique plants are a gardener’s delight:

• Continuous Harvest: Enjoy fresh onion greens and small bulbs throughout the growing season, from early spring until the first hard frost. The top-setting bulblets also offer mini-onions for culinary use.
• Extremely Hardy: These onions are exceptionally cold-tolerant, surviving temperatures well below freezing (USDA Zone 3 and above). They are a reliable perennial, returning year after year without replanting.
• Self-Propagating: The “walking” nature of these onions means they will naturally spread and multiply, creating new plants as the top sets root themselves. This makes them a truly low-effort addition to your garden.
• Versatile Culinary Use: Both the green tops and the small bulbs have a delicious, mild onion flavor. Use them fresh in salads, cooked in soups, stews, stir-fries, or as a flavorful garnish.
• Organic & Non-GMO: Our walking onions for planting are grown naturally, free from harmful chemicals, ensuring a healthy and pure product for your garden and table.
• Easy to Grow: Requiring minimal care, these onions are ideal for beginners. Simply plant them in a sunny spot with well-draining soil, and let them do their magic.
• Space-Saving: Can be grown in dedicated garden beds, containers, or even as an edible border, making them suitable for various garden sizes.

Plant Care & Growing Tips

Caring for your Egyptian Walking Onion sets is remarkably straightforward, making them a popular choice for gardeners seeking high reward with low effort. These hardy perennials thrive with basic attention. For optimal growth, choose a location that receives full sun, meaning at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day. While they tolerate some shade, full sun promotes stronger growth and more prolific bulblet production. Ensure your soil is well-draining; sandy loam is ideal, but they adapt to various soil types as long as water does not pool around the bulbs. Heavy clay soils should be amended with compost or sand to improve drainage.

Plant your perennial onion bulbs in late summer or fall for a spring harvest, or in early spring for a summer harvest. Space the JUMBO sets about 6-8 inches apart and plant them 1-2 inches deep, with the pointed end facing up. Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil. Once established, these onions are quite drought-tolerant, but consistent moisture will encourage better growth. Water deeply once a week, or more frequently during dry spells, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Fertilization is generally not heavily required, but a balanced organic fertilizer applied in early spring can boost vigor. These plants are incredibly hardy, thriving in USDA Zones 3-9, and can withstand harsh winter conditions, often emerging as one of the first greens in spring.
