Plant Care & Growing Tips

Caring for your Egyptian Walking Onion Sets is remarkably straightforward, making them an excellent choice for gardeners seeking a low-effort, high-reward plant. These hardy perennials prefer a location with at least 6-8 hours of full sun daily, though they can tolerate partial shade. For optimal growth and bulb production, ensure they receive ample sunlight. When choosing a planting site, consider their “walking” habit; they will spread over time as their top sets fall and root, so give them space to expand or plan to harvest the bulbils regularly.

These perennial onion bulbs thrive in well-draining soil. While they are adaptable to various soil types, a rich, loamy soil amended with compost will yield the best results. Plant the onion sets about 1-2 inches deep and 6-8 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting to help them establish. Once established, they are quite drought-tolerant but will benefit from consistent moisture, especially during dry spells. Avoid waterlogging, as this can lead to rot. Fertilize sparingly; a balanced organic fertilizer in early spring can boost growth, but often isn’t strictly necessary for these vigorous plants. They are extremely hardy, suitable for USDA zones 3-9, and can withstand severe winter conditions. Watch for signs of yellowing leaves, which might indicate a need for more water or nutrients, though they are generally pest and disease resistant. These summer fall planting onions are incredibly forgiving and will reward you with years of delicious harvests.
