Plant Care & Growing Tips

Successful cultivation of large red cherry tomato seeds begins with proper care and attention. Tomato seeds are a warm-weather crop, and for best results, they should be started indoors approximately 6-8 weeks before your region’s final spring frost date. Plant 2-3 seeds about 1/4 inch deep in each cell of a seed-starting tray. Ensure your soil is fertile, humusy, and well-drained, with an ideal pH range of 6.0-6.8. Consistent moisture and warmth (around 75-85°F) are crucial for germination, which typically occurs within 5-14 days. Once seedlings emerge and develop their first true leaves, thin to the strongest seedling per cell.

When transplanting your large red cherry tomato seeds starts, whether to larger pots or directly into the garden, space them 18-36 inches apart. As an indeterminate tomato seeds variety, these plants will grow indefinitely throughout the season, producing a continuous stream of fruit. This growth habit means they require significant support; heavy staking, caging, or trellising is essential to prevent the vines from sprawling and to support the weight of the abundant harvest. Provide a location with full sun (at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily) and consistent watering, especially during fruiting. Fertilize regularly with a balanced fertilizer formulated for tomatoes to support their continuous production. Watch out for common pests and diseases, addressing them promptly to ensure a healthy season for your open pollinated cherry tomato plants.

For optimal growth, ensure the soil remains consistently moist but not waterlogged. Mulching around the base of the plants can help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Pruning suckers (shoots that grow in the axils of leaves) can help direct the plant’s energy into fruit production, though some gardeners prefer to let indeterminate varieties grow more freely. Protecting young plants from late spring frosts is also vital. The robust nature of these large red cherry tomato seeds makes them a rewarding crop for any gardener willing to provide the necessary support and care for their continuous growth and harvest.

Size & Details

These large red cherry tomato seeds produce plants that are an indeterminate variety, meaning they will continue to grow and set fruit throughout the entire growing season until frost.
